05 Jan 2010 Radio Ninty's Nintendo Games of the Decade

logosource-1

A few weeks ago we asked you to send in your favourite 10 games from the past 10 years on all of Nintendo's platforms, a suprising number of you sent in your lists and it is now our pleasure to bring to you the list of games that made the final cut. There was a slight problem in that the fight for the final spot ended up with games with exactly the same number of points and thus all 5 have been included. There were ties elsewhere too, most prominently the two games that head the list had the most points. I'm sure you'll agree its a great list of games and shows the quality on offer over Nintendo's various platforms.

So without further delay, lets begin the countdown

10

As stated above, the fight for the 10th and final slot was fierce. Five different games make up the position, spread over 4 different platforms with at least one suprising inclusion. Here are those games.

minishcap-1
The first of two entries for Nintendo's hero in green, and probably the finest handheld adventure game in existence. Minish Cap see's Link shrinking down via the use of a magic hat to once again save Princess Zelda.

perfectdark-1
The only entry on the list from Rare, a Sci-Fi first person shooter built upon the success of Goldeneye. At the time of release Rare were the kings of console multiplayer and Perfect Dark was one of the must have games for Nintendo's N64 console.

odama-1

Possibly the oddest entry on the list, Odama was released right at the end of the Gamecube's shelf life and didn't really sell well at all. It was an odd blend of strategy game and pinball that used a microphone (which came bundled with the game) to direct the on-screen army.

newsupermariobros-1

One of the most succesful DS games released, and played a huge hand in bringing Mario back into many peoples lives regardless of what lifestyle they lead. Most certainly not the best Mario game released this decade, as you'll find later, but more than worthy of a mention.

gtachinatownwars-1
People said it couldn't be done, a proper GTA on a handheld. It had been tried before, the GBA games were mostly awful whilst the PSP games just felt far too scaled back. But Chinatown Wars was an original entry into the series designed from the ground up for the DS, and the quality showed, a definate must own for Nintendo's incredibly popular handheld.

9-1
finalfantasytacticsadvance-1
The highest placed handheld title goes to one of the most popular gaming franchises in existence. Both incredibly difficult and absolutely addictive Final Fantasy Tactics Advance was a turn-based strategy game for the Gameboy Advance, its a testament to the games overall quality that its still regarded as one of the finest games in the genre.

8-1
fzerogx-1
It seems Radio Ninty cannot let a year pass without mention of this stunning racing game. It came as a suprise when it was announced that Ye Olde Enemy Sega were to develop an entry of a Nintendo franchise but in the end everyone was glad that the two companies put aside their differences and allowed this particular piece of magic to happen.

7
supersmashbrosbrawl-1
It wouldn't be a Top Nintendo Games list without a mention of being able to beat up Nintendo's mascot now would it? Whats better than turning Bowser on the guy in the red hat? or sending Pikachu flying with a well placed sword slash from Link. Every iteration of Smash Bros has got better and bigger and this, the Wii release, is the definitive Smash Bros experience.

6
residentevil4
The highest charting non-Nintendo developed. Resident Evil 4 revitalised a tired series and genre and is still exceedingly entertaining to play through today.

5
papermario

A Mario RPG doesn't sound exactly stellar, and its easy to think "Oh god" considering how many pies the guy has his fingers in, but when a game is this inventive and able to point and laugh at itself you can't help but enjoy the ride.

4
windwaker-1
Yes, "Celda" makes the list, and placed incredibly high considering how much it still splits opinions. Ultimately one of Nintendo's most flawed master piece, purely because of the final quarter of the game, but worth putting in the time for for everything prior to that.

3
pikmin2-1
Our highest placed Gamecube game goes to a game that everyone who has played it (which is unfortunately only a small number) seems to absolutely adore. It took everything that was right with the original release and improved upon it in every single way imaginable and is probably the single game with the most mentions in Radio Ninty's entire history, yes even more than Super Mario World, Super Mario Bros. 3 and F-Zero GX!

1
As I previously mentioned, we have two games that are occupying the top spot, and considering how much the Wii seems to be disliked among the gaming community, its managed to see the release of two games that Radio Ninty has declared are must owns on more than one occassion. One became our Game of the Year for 2007 whilst the other is actually a brand new release that became the Radio Ninty Game of the Year for 2009, yes, that means that

supermariogalaxy-1 newsupermariobroswii-1
Super Mario Galaxy and New Super Mario Bros Wii both occupy the top spot, once again proving that you should never give up on Nintendo's moustachioed plump plumber. Both games are shining examples that the 2D and 3D platforming genre's still have alot to offer in this age of gun obsessed videogames.

So with the decade over, I'm sure you'll agree that right there is a great list of games spread across the five platforms that Nintendo have support, every single game there is a must play for any self respecting gamer, let alone anyone that calls themselves a Nintendo fan. But that wasn't all of the games submitted, in fact 56 inidividual games made up the initial list, a suprisingly large amount and here, for your perusal I will list them all alphabetically.

Advance Wars: Dual Strike, Bit Generations: Orbital, Boom Blox, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, Chibi Robo, Conkers Bad Fur Day, De Blob, Disgaea DS, Etrian Odyssey 2, F-Zero GX, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Fire Emblem 2 Sacred Stones, Fire Emblem Cube, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, Hello Pocoyo, Kororonipa, Luigi's Mansion, Mario & Luigi Partners in Time, Mario Golf: Advance Tour, Mario Kart DS, Mario Party 8, Mega Man 9, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, Metroid Prime, New Super Mario Bros DS, New Super Mario Bros Wii, No More Heroes, Odama, Ouendan 2, Osu! Takae! Ouendan!, P.N.03, Paper Mario, Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door, Perfect Dark, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Professor Layton and the Diablical Box, Pokemon Gold, Pikmin 2, Rayman Raving Rabbids, Resident Evil 4, Retro Game Challenge, Ribbit King, Soul Bubbles, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros Brawl, The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap, The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, WarioWare: Twisted, Viewtiful Joe, Wii Play, Wii Sports

Awesome stuff!

Some great games there, all of them essential really.

And yeah, Pikmin 2 gets more attention than any other game round these parts, although Mario is never forgotten

Also, with all the moaning we all do about the Wii, it's very interesting that the little white wonder is responsible for the best 2 games of the decade!

Don't forget to grab the related show folks!

Yay, I win the oddest game on the list award  :D

Seriously, though, Odama is utterly stonking, and well worth a trawl through the old games section in GS or CEX for, especially for us old pin freaks...
